The result of this would be that only two

pinnaces would be on duty at night instead of 3, and the ag-

gregate hours which the 3 pinnaces would run in the 24

hours would be reduced from 42 hours, under the present sys-

tem, to 30 hours.

Three pinnaces running 1260 hours in a

month of 30 days cost $44

-

56 in coal each.

The cost of coal being the same,3 pinnaces

running 900 hours in a month of 30 days will cost $31.83

each in coal.

Therefore the saving in coal effected by the

suggested reduction in the hours of auty, would be $38.19 a

month or $458.28 per annum.

There would also be a saving in repairs to

the pinnaces owing to diminution in wear and tear. The pin-

naces will perform 28 per cent less work per month, but it

is perhaps unsafe to hazard an estimate of the consequent

reauction in cost of repairs, which for the three averages

$1,000 a year,

I am of opinion that the night patrols of

the pinnaces may be curtailed as above suggested without

risk.

No diminution in the number of men on the es-

tablishment can be made if the above reaction in the pin-

nace patrols is made, owing to the fact that it is impossible

to keep the establishment always up to actual strength, and

allowance
